Toyota have re-entered the Sub-B segment after an absence of six years with the launch of the Toyota Etios.

The Etios consists of a range of entry-level sedans and hatchbacks designed especially for emerging markets (South Africa, Brazil and India) rivalling the likes of the Volkswagen Vivo, Ford Figo and Renault Sandero.

The words ‘simplicity’ and ‘affordability’ are cemented in their launch campaign with a starting price of R115 800 and the most expensive model complete both with a 2-year and 30 000 km service plan and three-year or 100 000km warranty - - a segment where running costs play a critical part. Specifications

• Both models are powered by a1.5-litre petrol engine. • Fuel consumption @ 6 litres per 100 km. • Steering: electrically assisted rack and pinion. • Brakes: ABS/EBD assistance.

The sedan also has a longer wheelbase, providing additional rear legroom, and making it a genuine five-seater and a large boot size of 595 litres

Whether the choice is for a sedan or a hatch-back, both models come with air conditioning, two airbags, electric windows, central locking and radios are an optional extra.

Toyota expects to sell 20 000 units a year, and putting the smile back on the faces of the 200 dealer network will also put a smile on the faces of their dealers. The last 5 years have been difficult for Toyota in this sector who have had to rely on the entry-level versions of the Yaris which is deemed over-priced.

PS. Since its launch in May last year, Toyota has sold 24 523 units and established the Toyota Etios as one of the three top-selling cars in South Africa.
